“Direct Negotiations”: Syria and Israel’s Search for Resolution
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad revealed in an interview with The Washington Post that his administration is in direct dialogue with Israel but maintains that an agreement can only be met if Israel reverts to its pre-December 8 borders. Al-Assad alleges that Israel has launched more than 1,000 airstrikes in Syrian territories, an issue which has yet to fuel a retaliation from Syria as it navigates towards rebuilding.
– Border Control and Key Agreements:
Confirming Assad’s claim, Syrian Leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani endorsed the talks, suggesting agreements are already within reach. Yet, he insisted on a return to pre-1967 war borders, stating that enduring Israeli presence in Syrian territories hampers peace. Al-Julani urged Israel to counter the risks from Iran and Hezbollah and praised the US, particularly former President Trump, for supporting the negotiations.
– Unrest in Pardes Hanna:
Unrest burgeoned when right-wing activists reportedly attacked the automobile of Ayman Odeh in Pardes Hanna. Approximately 70 activists were present during the incident, according to police reports. Later, Odeh mentioned the event online, emphasizing the necessity of a synergized Jewish-Arab unity to arrest such disruptive activities.
– Closure of Military Radio Station:
Israel Defense Minister, Israel Katz, plans to shut down the Galei Tzahal military radio station, triggering a debate on the potential creation of an advisory committee and necessitating the creation of new legislation. Government approval is not sufficient to close the station; an explicit law must be enacted, revealing conflicting opinions on the direction of Israeli military broadcasting.
– Hezbollah’s Warning:
Hezbollah leader, Naim Qassem, voiced concern over Israel’s escalating attacks in Lebanon, vowing that Hezbollah will not relinquish its weaponry. Qassem accused the US and Israel of meddling in Lebanon’s future to weaken the country’s resilience, while Israel Defense Forces maintain that Hezbollah’s fortification in southern Lebanon breaches ceasefire agreements.
– Conditional Ceasefire and Foreign Arrests:
An unofficial pamphlet suggests that the ceasefire with Hamas is dependent on Israel refraining from attacks on Gaza. Any violation will reactivate military operations against Israel, including a reinstated ban on Israeli boats in the Red Sea. The pamphlet also reveals a military network operative’s arrest in Saudi Arabia suspected of spying on Yemenese infrastructure.
