– Israel Recognizes Somaliland as Independent State:

In an unprecedented move, Israel has recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign nation, only the second country to do so following Taiwan. Somaliland, which declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, has not been globally recognized as a sovereign nation, despite functioning autonomously.

– Strategic Leverage in the Red Sea:

Israel’s recognition, endorsed by Prime Minister Netanyahu, gains Israel strategic leverage over the Red Sea region. This comes in the wake of Somaliland’s strategic location near Yemen, opening the possibility of a dominant control in the Red Sea and consequently, bringing Yemen within Israel’s reach.

– Global Reaction to Israel’s Recognition:

Following Israel’s announcement, Egypt, Turkey, and Somalia have collectively condemned the unilateral move, expressing concerns over potential disruptions to Somalia’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State maintains its recognition of the territorial integrity of Somalia, which includes Somaliland.

– Military Cooperation with Greece and Cyprus:

Simultaneously, Israel has also been deepening its regional alliances by signing a trilateral agreement with Greece and Cyprus. This cooperation on military activities has been supported by the U.S., with the agreement focusing on security, energy, and economic affairs.

– Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean:

This move is perceived as an attempt to curb Turkey’s influence in the Eastern Mediterranean and fortifies Israel and Cyprus’ strategic position. The alliance formed proves to be a significant security asset against Turkey, causing a potential power shift in the region.

– Syria Protests Israel’s Recognition:

Syria has harshly criticized Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as “a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter”. Highlighting the potential disruption this decision may cause to regional security and stability, Damascus warns that any attempts to support separatist movements pose a serious threat.
